For more than twenty years, applications based on P2P logic deliver more freedom to their users. From file-sharing to cryptocurrencies, they have revolutionized the way we design distributed systems, at a technical level and beyond. We believe that now is the time for a new wave of P2P systems: decentralized marketplaces. Relying on blockchains, they enable anyone to exchange services and monetize resources with no reliance on a trusted third party. Gilles will share the lessons learned at iExec with respect to the challenges faced when designing and deploying such a decentralized marketplace.

Online services (e.g. search engines, location-based services, video on demand, recommendation engines) require a massive amount of personal data harvested from their users. These data, such as location coordinates or search request history, can reveal highly sensitive user information such as political, religious, or sexual preferences. I will describe the risks stemming from the use of online services with respect to personal data and I will introduce a prospective approach for personal data protection based on decentralization and the use of hardened CPUs (e.g. Intel SGX). I will focus on two specific applications: Web requests and VOD systems.

La bataille du Libre is a new documentary directed by Phillipe Borrel and produced by Temps noir. The film deals with issues related to Open Source and free software. “Wheter in various fields of society like medical, finance, industrial, education, and even agriculture, almost no activity sector has escaped the strong hold of computer code. We depend on it in any human activity sector in which knowledge is key. And in the process we lose more and more of our autonomy because most of the software programs we use, without knowing it, are proprietary: their computer code being protected by patents owned by major corporations that earn disproportionate income from them. However, in the case of open source software, it can be freely used, copied, shared, and even improved by all. Open Source advocates then see the issue as philosophical and political, as well as a societal choice, while their contributing and emancipatory practice to software development start to disseminate much outside of IT and into public interest and the general good.”

PJ Klimek - Holo

While designing Holochain and on Holochain we often ask ourselves basic questions about information. What is it, how is it carried, how can it be accessed? Very often we end up noticing deep similarities to principles of physics, like relativity theory or quantum effects. Come and see how very plain principles of Holochain allow for unconstrained flow of information between agents. Let’s discuss how agent’s ownership over data can create a paradigm shift in our inter-human interaction.

PJ Klimek, Product Owner and Architect at Holo, will offer an introduction to the high-level architecture of Holochain, and will start a conversation about the relevant use cases for p2p applications

Blockstack is an open source project that allows users to create and control their own digital identity. The identity is blockchain based and follows the standards for decentralized identity (DID) by W3C. With these DIDs users can start to interact with other users, in particular create and validate user-related certificates, so-called Verifiable Credentials.

In this talk, Friedger will give a short introduction to Blockstack and explain how Verifiable Credentials can be used on a p2p basis.

Solidbox is an alternative to putting trust in service providers. Instead you run internet services yourself - without technical challenges but similar to a fridge or a wifi box: Cheap and dead simple to use!

Under the hood, Solidbox runs one of the oldest and most serious operating systems, Debian GNU/Linux, and among the included services are both conventional things like Jabber chat and a simple web hosting, as well as a set of Solid services for efficient and flexible data sharing both with humans and with other similar systems. Solidbox is a Free software project developed as an integral part of Debian.

Since the rise of civilizations, humankind hasn’t found a way to organize society without centralized power structures. By normalizing thought and social codes, they successfully synchronised the actions of millions and billions of individuals. We call it pyramidal collective intelligence. The global warming, the ultra-concentration of power and wealth, the extractive and patriarchal vision of the world, the anthropocentrism and speciesism prove that pyramidal collective intelligence has reach its limits. Today our species invents technologies and infrastructures that will enable a higher form of collective intelligence, the holomidal collective intelligence, distributed, open source, built on economies that integrate life in all its forms. Which technologies and what inner changes will provoke this transition? Let’s explore this together during our talk.

8 years ago cjdns was started to make the internet encrypted and decentralized, unlike TOR and I2P, it was not intended as an overlay but rather to a complete revisit of the way the internet should work, peer-to-peer and always encrypted. Since then it has had moderate community interest but has not lead to any actual infrastructure buildout.

My current project is a sort of phase-two of cjdns, building a blockchain called PKT in order to create a bandwidth market so that anyone capable of running fiber and pointing antennas can participate in building the infrastructure of the new internet. All of these fibers and wireless links will become a “pool of bandwidth” which a professional network operator can reach into and pull out the bandwidth necessary to build their own network.

This talk aims to limit technical details to the minimum that is necessary so please do not feel intimidated to attend. There will be time reserved for questions so that in case there is not enough technical detail, topics can be addressed more fully.

During the workshop, you will install cjdns, pktd and pktwallet, you will setup cjdns as a VPN using the free VPN exit provided by IPRedator and you will mine some PKT to your wallet and transfer it.

Come with a Linux or Apple computer and a basic to intermediate skill level with using the terminal. If you are not comfortable using the command line on your computer, I recommend studying The CLI Crash Course which should get you a basic working knowledge within a few days to a week.

Get yourself up to speed with Zero Knowledge Proofs (ZKP). ZKPs are cryptographic methods that enable to prove the validity of an attribute without revealing the underlying data. They can be used in a wide range of applications, such as voting, self-sovereign identity, authentication, etc.

We use the vote use case in order to introduce ZKPs and present the components required to build your own applications..

If you want to get familiar with ZK identity matter beforehand, you can read this: Building trust while keeping data undisclosed.

This hands-on workshop will help you to get a grip on ZKP technology. We will build together an anonymous voting system using Semaphore.

No prior knowledge of cryptography nor decentralized network is needed.

Please come with your laptop, preferably with Docker, node, a browser with a recent version and an Ethereum wallet such as MetaMask.

If you want to be 100% ready, you may want to read first this introduction to ZKPs and this one to Semaphore.

P2P Festival

Protocole is plugged to the « cryptosphere », where one can meet users and supporters of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, as well as entrepreneurs and researchers.

Giving them a voice makes it obvious that Bitcoin as a way of challenging monetary institutions is actually part of larger trend of the society as a whole. Cryptocurrency are not just a new “asset class”, but complex and far-reaching social phenomenon.

About the Festival

Our goal is to offer 5 days of sharing, learning, meeting and playing around all the dimensions of the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) revolution. The technological aspect of P2P is essential, but we also believe that it materializes philosophical and ethical principles.P2P applies to a wide array of aspects, from secure and privacy-preserving communication, to knowledge-sharing, to participative governance, to digital currencies, or even art!Paris P2P Festival will be a fantastic opportunity to gather P2P supporters, regardless of their particular approach and interests. We are calling any team or individual with an active interest in P2P to join the Festival, use it to set up their own meeting, offer a workshop, share a talk or a presentation, take part to the hackathon. The event was born out of our Paris P2P monthly meetups at Ground Control. We are willing to open it to a wider audience: individuals, collectives, associations, and businesses willing to be part of a community event, without lucrative purpose.

Goals

Gather P2P communities around talks, workshops, movies, performances, hack sessions, meetings…

Promote to the general public the value of privacy protection, free and open source software, commons and decentralized governance

Trigger serendipitous encounters and healthy debates between teams and individuals involved in the space

Encourage knowledge-sharing between projects, entrepreneurs, researchers, developers

Showcase important projects to the general public

Just enjoy a great moment, in a great place, with great people!
